Shortcuts, hotkeys and mnemonics are similar concepts.

Hotkeys and mnemonics[edit]

“Mnemonic” is the term used by Microsoft and Oracle (Java) to designate a “hotkey”.

Hotkeys and shortcuts[edit]

A “shortcut” is a combination of keys.

An “hotkey” is only one key, one letter. It is in a menu, and appears when the user press the key Alt.

In the picture below (Eclipse), shortcuts are in green, hotkeys in violet.

Hotkeys with Windows[edit]

Microsoft documentations call “hotkey” a screen-wide shortcut, a shortcut that can be used even if the application declaring it is not in the foreground and has not the focus.
